Core Facilities: Overview

There are 3 Center Facilities Cores supporting the 3 Research Projects in Genomics, Remote Sensing and Toxic Algal Culture.  These Facilities Cores build on the experience, resources and expertise of the University of Miami and its collaborators.  The Remote Sensing Core at the University of Miami involves the use of NASA, NOAA and NSF-funded research and resources to provide highly accurate remote sensing data for ocean and coastal waters to linked to oceanographic and biomedical processes both rapidly and inexpensively.  The Toxic Algal Culture Facility at Florida International University (FIU) builds on over a decade of NIEHS-funded work in the area of marine and freshwater HAB organisms and toxins to provide culture and organism identification facilities as well as toxin analyses.  The Genomics Core builds on a >$1.5 million dollars from the University of Miami Board of Trustees to expand Genomics at the University of Miami; this Genomics Core provides basic genomics resources and expertise to the researchers at the same time as collaborating with the Toxic Algal Culture Facility to develop new, highly accurate, rapid and inexpensive methods for HAB organism and toxin and Microbial organism detection.  As noted above, the development of such methods are particularly important for the expanding impoverished human populations living in subtropical and tropical marine coastal areas.
