NSF UNDERGRADUATE REU AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI’S NSF-NIEHS Oceans and Human Health (OHH) CenterWe have focused our research projects in the subtropical and tropical oceans adjacent or near Florida: the coastal waters of Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea. In order to create an environment of inquiry in which oceanographic investigators and biomedical scientists are engaged in fully collaborative research, each research project has 2 principal investigators, an oceanographer and a biomedical researcher. Overall, the University of Miami’s NSF-NIEHS Oceans and Human Health (OHH) Center includes 3 Research Projects and 3 Core Facilities. The 3 Research Projects are known as: Recreational Microbes (Assessment of Microbial Indicators for Monitoring Recreational Water Quality in Marine Subtropical and Tropical Environments), Toxic HABs (Toxic Algae: a General Phenomenon in Subtropical and Tropical Coastal Waters and Open Ocean Environments?), and HAB Functional Genomics (Functional Genomics of a Subtropical Harmful Algal Bloom Species: Karenia brevis Davis). The 3 Facilities Cores (known as Genomics, Remote Sensing and Toxic Algal Culture) support the research projects. For 5 years, two (2) undergraduates per year will work closely throughout the year for up to 2 years with one of the OHH Center Research Projects, mentored by the individual Research Project Principal Investigators, as well as interact with the 3 Facilities Cores and participate in the University of Miami NSF NIEHS OHH Center interdisciplinary scientific and outreach activities. We strongly believe that training in basic methods will provide students with a prerequisite background for a variety of fields of scientific endeavor. There will also be opportunities to participate extensively in field sampling and environmental modeling. All undergraduate students will be involved in the writing process as reports and publications are prepared, as well as performing literature searches in specific research areas. Finally, the undergraduates will have the opportunity to actively participate in the University of Miami NSF NIEHS OHH Center activities (such as informal laboratory meetings and more formal scientific conferences and outreach activities); they will also be encouraged to present their research in appropriate scientific venues both within and outside of the University of Miami. Student Recruitment and Selection Undergraduate students from the University of Miami and from its collaborator, Florida International University (FIU) will be recruited to participate in interdisciplinary research activities with the University of Miami NSF NIEHS OHH Center Investigators. Of note, both the University of Miami and FIU are federally designated minority institutions; minority and women undergraduates will be specifically targeted for recruitment. In conjunction with their Mentor, students will be required to submit a brief application to the NSF NIEHS OHH Center Administrative Office outlining their proposed research activities; this application will be reviewed by the NSF NIEHS OHH Center Internal Advisory Committee. Each undergraduate will work during 8 weeks of the summer, and for 2 semesters during the year. Each student will be funded for 1-2 years based on the Annual Review of the Principal Investigators with the NSF NIEHS OHH Center Internal Advisory Committee (IAC).
